Catherine Parsons, the Dutchess County BOCES Model Schools program coordinator successfully procured a Learning Technology Grant for $50,000 dollars. The grant was awarded by the NYSED (NY STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT), which gave a total of $3.2 Million to sixty-six educational institutions statewide. “Using the resources of the proposed grant award along with multiple other funding sources participants will engage in intensive staff development experiences, on-site teacher mentoring/coaching, examination of Math 8 Assessment Data drilled to key idea an d performance indicator (pi), implementation of student response system hardware and software with aligned assessment databank and measurement information recording features, learning experience writing, local peer review and turn-key presentations. The shared focus will be to enable districts/schools to raise student achievement on specific concepts/key ideas, ultimately effecting individual student and district/school wide performance on the Grade 8 Math Assessment.” We are pleased to announce that Dutchess County BOCES has chosen Eduware and the EduGame! Interactive Classroom System as it’s choice to implement learning technology in the classroom. Eighteen schools will participate in this study which will focus on Math students in grades 5-8. Students will use the EduGame! to improve their formative assessment ability. Results will be statistically tracked and analyzed.
Indicate how technology is employed to improve classroom instruction rather than placed in computer labs. “Inherently, the technology selected is designed to be used in the regular classroom environment. The use of one computer is all that is needed to support the system. Eduware, Inc. of Huntington, NY (http://www.eduware.com) will provide the hardware and software for the project. Some district/school technology configurations will be addressed on an individual basis to allow for the implementation of the systems. Each teacher will be provided with a package of 25+ student responders (wireless remote keypads), a teacher remote, a receiver unit, and an appropriate database consisting of over 4000 middle level math questions (called the EduGame!). The teacher may use this NYS aligned database to generate key questions throughout the lesson or the teacher may use their own questions. The questions are projected on the screen and all students enter responses simultaneously. Each student remote has a unique identification number which appears on the screen in a small circle. Students can view instant feedback on their responses and the teacher will know how each student in class has answered the question. The teacher is able to access and track overall answer distribution, individual student responses, do item analysis for each question in the lesson, and have a permanent, cumulative record of all results. In addition the software allows for the disaggregating of compiled data by a variety of criteria which makes it an excellent source of information for data analysis.”
Proof Positive! A response from a teacher that has taken part in the program. This is Jenn Griffin from Pine Plains following up with how I used Eduware this summer (I was part of the Dutchess County BOCES grant program). I used your software many times to “play the game” and to do on screen polling with my 6th through 8th grade math summer school students. The use of the Edugame increased student interest and motivation in summer school which is usually a difficult task. Students were excited to take tests this way and were grateful for the instant feedback it provided. Several students felt that they performed better because they were interacting with the computer during the test and did not get distracted. It was an extremely positive experience.
